Improvements

Week 15: Improvement Thoughts

  • Planning Weeks: I think this is a great idea. I am always a fan of a structured planned course because I am bad at organization
  • Expand Story: Again I enjoy knowing when I need to have things finished by. And because the stories take a decent amount of time, I like the idea of having an expanded planning period.
  • Audio Recordings: I am not the biggest fan of audio recordings. I tend to zone out when listening and don't pick up on a lot of key details. People are different though, so this may be better for someone else!
  • Writing Tutorials: I like this idea! I learn by seeing and some aspects of my grammar are awful. Although it has improved some, I think seeing examples would help a lot.
  • Thematic Reading: I really like this idea and was even thinking about suggesting it. I believe it would engage the students even more if there was an overall theme surrounding that weeks' stories.
  • Movie Week Suggestion: I think it would be cool to have one or two weeks where the reading assignment is a short movie that would span over two parts (a and b). I would like to see where the story adaptations extended after seeing a movie.

Week 14 Story: Tali

The Story of Tali

"Waves" Source: Pixabay

"And you!" said King Tanaka. "You will be exiled to the Sathar Desert." the King said with a smirk.
Tali's heart sank into her stomach. The Sathar Desert was they driest place of the known world. The ocean had never been out of her sight and the thought of it made her sick.
"Please!" she begged. "I have done very little harm to anyone besides the incident with Jara."
"You will leave this instant!" the King screamed.
The guards took her. Her grandfather, the King, kept his smug gaze on her as they escorted her out of the hall. Her grandfather had always disliked her. Her happy clumsy personality conflicted with his harsh stern ways. She regretted the incident with her cousin Jara. "I would not be in this mess if it were not for that wretched girl." She thought to herself.
Tali had always been jealous of her cousins relationship with her brother, Kaloo. From a young age the two had always gotten along and excluded Tali from activities. As a young teen Tali attended Jara's birthday party where she performed her sabotage. As Jara was blowing out her candles, Tali drew the water from the barrels and splashed it down on Jara's head. Despite her bubbly personality, Tali had never handled jealously well. She was banned from using her manipulation of water from then on.
After the birthday incident, her water powers grew weak from lack of use. She began practicing in secret by the great fountains at night. In the vast desert Tali would have no moisture nor water sources to manipulate. She believed her evil grandfather had banished her to the desert in the hopes of destroying her water abilities.
That night she was placed in a locked carriage used for prisoners. The two guards, leading the carriage, headed east towards the Sathar Desert. The trip would be five full grueling days. On the second day they let her out of the carriage to get some fresh air. Tali immediately recognized the young guard that opened the door. It was one of her friends she had known in school.
"Tali?" The young guard said.
"Is that you Bathar?" Tali responded.
"They had not told me who we were escorting, why we taking you to such a horrid place?" The young guard asked.
"My grandfathers orders." Tali responded.
"No talking! Back in the carriage!" The guard captain yelled.
Bathar led Tali back into the carriage slipping her an extra slice of bread. It was three more days of traveling until the reached her final destination. Bathar unlocked the back of the carriage and let Tali out. The sun blinded her eyes and the dry hot air burned her skin. Her shackles were removed and she was given a small knife, canteen, and a loaf of old bread. The guards and the carriage turned around and headed back towards Tali's home. She opened the canteen. No water, of course. Inside there was a small rolled up note.
"Head south by east for one day."
The message had been from Bathar. She set off towards the hills in the distance as the sun began to set. She decided to take shelter under a small overhanging rock for the night. She had only been asleep for a few hours before the sun began to shine bright, waking her up. The sky around her was pitch black but a bright star, that she thought was the sun, was shining from the hills. It shown with as much power as the sun. No longer tired, Tali set off towards the mysterious star.

Authors Note

Tali's character is based off of the kindness, selflessness, and loyalty similar to Sita. Sita was the daughter of King Janaka. This gave me the idea to have her grandfather be King Tanaka. Just as Rama was accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana, I wanted her to have some help along the way. This is where Bathar came into the picture. Even though he was not a permanent companion, he helped Tali along the way. The bright jewel towards the end of the story draws inspiration from the Syamantaka Jewel found in the stories of Krishna.

Story: Week 11

Jara

"Northern Lights" Source: PixaBay

"Jara, I am sorry it has to be this way. It is in the best interest of our two cities." said her father. "I have done nothing wrong, I am the one who has tried to keep peace among us." Jara responded. "You must face the same punishment as your siblings and cousins. I will hear no more of this!" the King declared. Jara stormed out of the hall, where she was met with guards to escort her to her room. Tears began to flow from her eyes thinking about leaving behind everyone she has ever known. While gathering her things she heard the guards conversation outside her door. "They were supposed to return four days ago." whispered one guard. "That kid was nothing but trouble, I am sure they just had a few hold ups along the way." the second guard whispered back. "Kaloo!" Jara thought to herself. She realized they must have been talking about her cousin who was exiled a week prior. She had always had a strong relationship with her cousin, despite his temper. She thought he was just misunderstood and received too much criticism from his father and the people. The guards knocked and told her it was time to leave. She took one last look and left the living quarters without saying goodbye to her parents. In her mind they had betrayed her and her brother, this was something that could never be forgiven.
Her destination would be the Northern Glaciers, a three week journey to the coldest and darkest corner of their known world. The boat transporting her and three guards was outfitted with ice breaking equipment; it was the cold season and the waters would be frozen over. Jara was not shackled, unlike her cousin Kaloo. She was considered the least dangerous of the four cousins, and had not shown any aggression in the past. Her dark skin kept her hidden on nights with no moon, much like this one. The only way to spot her would be by her eyes that always had a slight glow to them. The ship set off, disappearing into the dark night. Looking to the stars she thought of her brother and relatives. She did not worry about her brother, Rama. He had always been able to take care of himself. Even in the desolate islands he was exiled to, she knew he would be fine. Kaloo, however, worried her deeply. He had always been dependent on someone, and never on his own. When they were young she would defend him from bullies that teased him for being so small. Jara believes this is what caused his temper and furious outbursts. Exhausted from the eventful day, Jara fell asleep on the front of the ship, under the stars. She awoke to the three guards having an argument.  Blending in with the night she crept around the side of the ship to see what was going on. A pigeon had delivered a letter, "What do you mean he escaped?!" yelled the captain. They were talking about Kaloo, he had escaped his transport and killed both of the guards. "The king wants us to take a detour and search for the boy." said the captain, "We should be arriving tomorrow."

Week 8: Growth Mindset

Strengths and Weaknesses

"Strong Brain" Source: Pixabay

After reflecting on my personal strengths and weaknesses I realized they differ depending on the situation. Looking at the list, I find myself only focusing on grades for classes I have little interest in and focusing on learning in classes where I enjoy the material. The same goes for doing the bare minimum. Lack of motivation and flat out laziness play a lot in to this. In classes where I find motivation to learn I perform with my best work but in classes where I lack interest I usually find myself doing the bare minimum just to get the grade I want. My biggest  weakness I need to grow into a strength is procrastination. I am very bad at doing things last minute, this usually is true for any class. However, at work or anything outside of school this is not true. Listing out my weaknesses on paper makes me realize what I need to work on. This helps develop a plan to grow these weaknesses simply by realization.

Week 8 Reflections

Reflection

"Writing" Source: Pixabay

Reading

Over the past seven weeks I have enjoyed most of the readings I have read so far. My favorite was reading about the gods and goddesses in "Hindu Gods and Heroes". Mahabharata was probably my least favorite, it was really similar to Ramayana and kind of seemed like the same story each week. My reading schedule has usually consisted of reading on the assigned days. My reading notes have made the weekly stories easier. I try and get a good description of the characters and the main theme/ plot for that section of the story. In the near future I would like to read an epic about heroes and possibly the Jataka tales.

Writing

I have really enjoyed creating the stories I have written thus far. I learned writing and creativity comes really easy for me if I just sit down and get started. That is my favorite part, having ideas flowing and putting them down on paper. My biggest problems are probably grammar issues. I usually turn to my english major roommate for help. I love what I have going for my storybook right now, it gives a lot of room for imagination. I would like to fix some of the grammar issues I come across so it doesn't stop my writing flow.

Connecting

Reading through other peoples stories I find myself admiring the flow and descriptive writing they have. Some points I would like to avoid is too much narrative between the characters. I am not the best writer but I think I have given decent feedback to the best of my ability. In the future I can look for grammatical errors in my peer's writings, this would be good practice for me as well.

Story Planning Week 7: Jara

Jara Chapter Planning

"Glacier Night" Source: Pixabay

Ideas
  • Unlike the other two stories, I want to show Jara receiving her exile news from her father
  • Show some grudge towards her father, much like her cousin Kaloo
  • Jara is sixteen and the sister to Rama
  • Jara is dark skinned
  • Jara can manipulate light and expel it form her eyes
  • Her eyes are usually glowing but varying in intensity depending on mood
  • Exiled to the northern glaciers
  • This is the farthest from home out of the exile locations
  • Light only shines for a few hours per day
  • She is considered the least dangerous
  • The god/goddess she meets becomes a parent figure in place of her father

Notes

"Pandava brothers = The Princes of Elephant City"
-Rama and Jara are similar to the Pandava brothers

"Arjuna is exiled and his adventures begin including burning the forrest with Agni"
-Jara could meet a god/goddess like Arjuna did while on exile

Styles
-Similar format to the Rama and Kaloo chapter's, besides the start
-Narrative between Jara and her father
-Narrative between Jara and her god/goddess she meets
-Show a transition of Jara

Character Sketch
-Jara: 16, dark skin, glowing eyes, strong
-Father: powerful, remorseful, betrayal

Authors Note
This story is loosely based off the stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata.  I used some characters from this story and ideas of dark and light to fuel the overlying theme. The idea of the cousins came from Mahabharata. In this story one of the cousins is exiled and has an encounter with the god Agni where he burns down the forrest for him. The Pandava brothers have all sorts of adventures in the forrest including Arjuna getting his golden armor form Shiva, and Yudhishthira answering all of the serpents riddles

Week 6 Story: Kaloo

Kaloo

"Kaloo" Source: Pixabay

The air is hot and heavy, saturated with moisture it is impossible to be dry. The deep blue water gradually turned green as the island approached. With the green water came the increasing swampy smell of the Pergonia Islands. In school  Kaloo had read in school that it rains twenty out of the twenty-four hours. The thought of a constant barrage of water made him sick as his disgust deepened. Anger and betrayal filled his heart. His own father had banished him to live life on such a vile island and despite his mistakes he felt this to be unforgivable . He could already feel the moisture seeping into his skin and dampening his flame. "I refuse to live here, I must escape this dreadful place", he thought to himself. "Fifty miles east are the red plains, take me there and I will not harm you", Kaloo shouted to the guards. "Shut it!", said the guard followed by a smack of his whip to the back of the neck. Kaloo could feel the heat begin to grow, starting in his stomach and extending to his shackled hands and feet. The iron chains began to glow as his anger grew. "One last warning, turn this boat around!" said Kaloo. "Thats enough!", said the second guard as he kicked Kaloo in the side. Kaloo gasped for air, his eyes turned red as his chains grew hotter. He felt uneasy, the same uncontrollable feeling that accompanied burning down the local market as a young boy. He rose and threw off the molten chains. The guard with the whip ordered him to stand down, but Kaloo only saw the movement of his mouth. The ringing in his ears was far to loud, as the heat began to reach his face. The guard mouthed a series of commands as his whipping arm swung back, the brass tip hurled towards Kaloo's face leaving a deep cut. Kaloo felt as though someone was controlling him. His right arm raised, in line with the belly of the guard. His arm felt as though it was going to explode, until a bolt of fire sent the guard flying off the boat and into the sea. What seemed to have taken place in a few minutes happened in an instant. The second guard swung his axe at Kaloo, slicing down his shoulder. He felt the heat in his toes and swung around kicking the guard in the temple. The kick exploded with fiery crack, scorching the guards face and knocking him unconscious. The ringing in his ears began to retreat along with the heat in his limbs. He felt a sharp pain and fell to the floor clinching his shoulder. Blood flew fast from the wound and he began to feel light headed. Kaloo fetched the medical kit below the captains wheel, fumbling around until he found thread but no needle. His right arm had lost feeling and needed to close the wound quick. He focused, searching for the heat he felt earlier in his stomach. It grew as he guided it towards his left finger. Reaching over his right shoulder he expelled a small flame, cauterizing the wound. Although the pain was immense, it was overcome by the feeling of joy. This had been the first time he was able to control his fiery power. He shackled the guard and steered the ship due east. He headed away from the island towards the vast red plains and even more importantly towards his father.

Week 5 Story Planning: Kaloo

Kaloo Chapter Planning
Ideas
  • Start with Kaloo on his journey to exile
  • Headed towards the southern islands of Pergonia
  • The island limits his ability of fire by raining 20 hours a day
  • Have him try to escape his boat there
  • Has bad anger so possibly kill one of the guards
  • As punishment a guid might injure him
  • Have Agni (fire god) speak to him
Notes
"Ravana's brother Kumbhakarna good warrior, maybe lazy reminds of snorlax"
-I want Kaloo to somewhat mimic Ravana in his demeanor
-Alos want him to meet a guy like Kumbhakarna

"I like this illusion, it solidifies their position as the bad guy"
-Again, I want Kaloo to be a shady character like Ravna

Syles
-I want this format to be similar to Rama's first chapter.
-Also want Agni to tell him not to be afraid of his power and not to let people suppress him
-Also want a lot of narrative to show the dark side and shady side of Kaloo

Character Sketch
-Kaloo: shady, mad, rebellious, and not wanting to listen to anyone
-Kumbhakarna: (attitude wise) I want this character to be opposite of Kaloo
-Gaurd: Dislike Kaloo not only for his attitude but also power

Feedback Focus

Focusing Techniques Ranked:

1. Copy and Delete
2. Reading Out Loud
3. Use a Timer

Advantages:

Copy and Delete- Quick form of notes, makes reading go by faster
Reading Out Loud- Catch more details, and understand more of the story
Use a Timer- Only focusing on reading

Disadvantages:

Copy and Delete- If you don't make a note, you can forget which comment goes with what part
Reading Out Loud- Takes a long time
Use a Timer- Only reading, if you have a comment you may forget it when you are done

I was surprised by the copy and delete method, at first I thought it would be pointless and writing down notes would be better. After giving it a shot I enjoyed it, especially if I did not enjoy what I was reading. It seemed like it gave me a sense of finishing the story in steps instead of a drawn out read.
I will try the copy and delete method in the future. I have used the reading out loud method when I was younger because I would skip over a lot of information reading the stories in my head. I enjoy having a physical copy of the book and making annotations in the margin. I liked the Cat and Dog story, reminded me of a favorite childhood movie and really validated how I feel about cats.

Week 4 Story: Rama

Fifteen days have passed on an imperial boat. The young Rama is shackled and heavily guarded in route to his new "home". The gaseous air floating above the blue waters of the Golpitha islands burned Rama's lungs. Rama did not resist, he accepted his temporary sentence with honor. Despite the poisonous air, the island was beautiful in its own regard. The black volcanic soil and clear waters provided a plentiful habitat for the tropical creatures. The shackles were unchained and Rama swam to shore, leaving the only faces he would see for the next five years behind. Upon reaching the black sandy shore, Rama had an odd feeling about the volcanic island. "Something is off, something is too perfect about this so called prison", Rama thought to himself. Rama decided not to explore do the receding sunlight and made camp on the shore. Exhausted from the long journey, Rama quickly fell asleep.
"What are you doing here!", boomed a deep voice. Rama was surrounded in a dark fog, unable to speak out to the monstrous voice. "I sense something in you I have not felt in a long long time", said the dark fog surrounding Rama. Rama tried to run but his legs were thigh deep in the cold black sand. The fog closed in, seeping into his nose and lungs. The voice grew louder and louder, ringing Rama's ears. "Boom!" Rama woke in an instant, clothes drenched in sweat desperately trying to gather himself. "Boom!" What Rama thought was the voice from his slumber was coming from the heart of the island. The ground began to shake, and the lightening revealed what was hidden in the night sky. The volcano was pouring smoke from its highest point. "BOOM!" Rama looked up to see a blinding explosion. The volcano blew molten lava from its mouth, spewing hot rock and ash over the island. The trees surrounding the volcano began to smoke; the smoke soon turned to flames as the lava cascaded over them. With the lava fast approaching, Rama began to run towards the second highest hill on the island. The heat scorching his heels and back reminded him of his evil cousin, Kaloo. The hill Rama had seen from a distance was no hill, but a rocky jagged cliff. Rama tried manipulating the air to lift him higher into the face of the cliff but the heavy gaseous air was something he had never experienced. The lava was approaching fast, only a few yards away. He began to climb the loose jagged rock. The lava splashed against the cliff a couple yards below him. He leaped upwards to a notch in the cliff but his weight broke the loose rock. Holding on with one arm, his grip began to slip. Rama's sweaty palm finally slipped from the rock and he tumbled down towards the molten rock. In his head he heard the booming voice from his nightmare, "HAHAHA" yelled the deep voice. Rama was not ready to die but began accepting his fate. Out of the corner of his eye, a swooping figure snagged Rama's arm lifting him away from the lava. The gaseous air blurred Rama's vision but cleared for a split second. To Rama's surprise, a large man stood above him. Upon further inspection, the "man" had long dark fur and hands twice the size of his own. "My name is Faboo, come with me."

  • Ravana's wife is in despair but could possibly be Sita? This would be a crazy twist
  • Rama is suspicious of Sita, I agree it seemed like she didn't try too hard to escape Ravana

  • Rama returns home just in time (his brother was going to commit suicide) kind of crazy
  • Rama is King!
